How many serves of fruit and vegetables should we be eating?

The 2 fruit and 5 vegetables rule is a good rule of thumb in general. The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating identifies the serves for adults, adolescents and children according to their age and life stage.

The recommended daily intake for adults is at least 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables, although pregnant and breastfeeding women need to amp this up to about 4 and 6.

Here are 5 easy ways to add more veggies to your day:

  1. Discover fast ways to cook: Steam your veggies in the microwave for a fast and healthy addition to any meal. Make sure you add a little water.
  2. Be ahead of the game: Pre prepare some snack size capsicum, carrot or broccoli and keep them in the fridge for a quick anytime snack,
  3. Chose vegetables rich in colour: Brighten your place with good-for-you reds, oranges and dark greens. The more colour variety the more nutrient variety.
  4. While you’re out: When eating out, ask for a side of veggies or salad rather than fries or bread.
  5. Savour the seasons: Buy vegetables in season for maximum flavour and minimum cost.
